Fabulous Spiderwoman – Roxanne
We are glad to present another interview of our series „Talking with celebrities“. Probably Germany’s leading lady magician, Roxanne became famous with her original act „Spider women“. She can be seen often performing along with her husband world class magician - Topas. On stage Roxanne creates character of mysterious and decisive women, is she like that off stage? How did she develop her act? These and more questions were discussed when Roxanne and I sat down to talk about simple but important features in the life of lady magician. Mantas Wizard
Mantas Wizard: When did you meet magic? Roxane: It happened very early, I was a little child and my grandmother gave me a magic set that she founded it in the attic. I gave my first show in the kindergarten and I was so successful that I am still doing this until now (laughs). At some point I was doing drama at school and left magic aside, it was also because I had no contact with other magicians. And later I met Thomas (Topas) and he brought me back to magic. We both found out that we have that same passion to magic. MW: Your stage persona has a strong and dramatic persona, how you developed it? R: I always thought that it would be interesting to do an act with this kind of character. And our friend and director Ebenhard Riese, he knew me and helped to develop this character. MW: Is it the same Roxanne that is sitting here with me or is just acting? R: Maybe it is only a small part of me. But in my private life this character is not very dominant (laughs). MW: What is it like being women in a male dominant profession? R: I like it very much! I always felt protected. Besides, I travel with my husband and it is much more difficult when you travel alone. I really enjoy performing solo also, because there I am not only assistant; I am performer presenting my act. It is sometimes good for my ego (laughs). But still, most of all I love to travel with my husband. To sum up, I think there were more advantages to me, because it is easier to find new ideas, because there are not so many women in magic. MW: Your character also looks very confident, are you nervous before your performances? R: I have some little things that I do before going on stage. When I first performed this act in public I was really nervous and it was an opposite of my character. But I did it many times and now I am much more confident. Though I do this act for about 10 years, still I feel some tension, but I learn to enjoy adrenaline. MW: Do you feel the difference performing for magicians and for laypeople? R: There are different reactions on different things. Magicians react more on new unseen effects. And the laymen do not recognize it. MW: Do you have your favorite magicians, who inspire you? R: There are many which I really like. I am a big fan of Tina Lenert and Juliana Chen and Galina. They inspired me to create my own act. My husband Thomas helps me a lot, I enjoy watching his magic. Topas: Would she say this if I was not here… (laughs) R: No I am a big fan of him. MW: What is the most difficult thing being a magician? Do you find any negative spots of being a magician? R: Well mostly I feel privileged to do magic in my life as my profession. I really enjoy the time on stage. Only packing after the show, when I am tired gets a little on my nerves (laughs). But these are my props, my material which I carry with respect. There are much more things that I love about being a magician - I love to travel, meet new people and perform. MW: I wish you best luck and thank you very much.
