Dirk losander

Mantas Wizard: Well, Losander is famous among magicians as a master of levitations, what is it in the art of levitation that attracts you? Why levitation, why not manipulation or doves?

Losander: I think levitation is the only field in magic where the effect is so pure. You don’t have to talk; you do not have to explain anything. Even if people look away for a second and then look back, they can still see an entire effect. I think it is the most visual thing that you can do in magic. Especially, if you do it good… (Laughs)

MW: I would like to ask about your stage character – you are a sorcerer, with a romantic attitude. How did you come up with your character? Is it the same Losander I am talking with now or is it some way adopted?

L: I developed my act years ago, and I came thru many different characters. My wife is very good at re-defining characters – she helped me a lot with it. She asked me – what do you want to say? I had no thoughts about it before. I came up I wanted to be a wizard. (01:13) Back then I was having short hair, wearing glasses. So I grew up my hair, got rid of the glasses, we found out a new look. And finally everything comes out together. The material I was already doing, but it came in a new look as it is now.

MW: While I was watching your show, I was surprised about both the adoption of the classics and about the new material, new ideas – how do you come up with this?

L: If you work with one and the same principle like levitation for a long time, you redefine already existing methods. I was inspired by Tommy Wonder and his idea of floating birdcage, so I used this idea to create floating table effect.

MW: You have been performing all around the world, do you fell cultural differences while performing for different people? Is the magic the language that everyone understands?

L: I think my type of magic works all around the world. All my effects are visual. I hate certain card tricks, because if you don’t concentrate 100 percent, if you look away for a second – you can not understand what the guy is doing. I think some magic is too complicated, they lack entertainment. If someone looks back and then still gets the effect – that’s the magic one should perform. And if you perform magic like that – you can perform anywhere around the world. If the effect is visual - you don’t have to talk.

MW: Does this mean that you prefer stage magic?

L: Actually, no – I perform anywhere. I can do my act in the lobby, or in a small room, or on the stage, or fully surrounded. That is what I like most about my act. I have been performing on a very diverse situations and no matter what – you have to perform your at. So I can do my act regardless on the situation. So it is not convenient to be able to perform only on the stage, because most of the time you even don’t have it! (Laughs)

MW: Yes, we all know what it is to perform in a real life situations. And my last question: among the magic that you perform do you have your favorites?

L: Well, my favorite effect is of course floating table. And working with soap bubbles, I like it a lot.

MW: Thank you very much for taking time to talk!
